Welcome to the storkcraft baby Buyer’s Guide! We’ve designed this section to make learning
how to buy a crib fast and convenient – and to give you the confidence to make smart, well-educated buying choices.
How to Buy a Crib
- The crib is one of the earliest and most important purchases
you are going to make for your nursery. Not only is it the
focal point of the nursery but it is also the only environment
in which you will put your child and leave him or her unattended.
- All other products carry the warning, “Never leave your child unattended”. Not so with a crib. This is why we recommend
that your crib be new and of North American design – so that it meets the rigid North American safety standards.
- As soon as you know you are going to need a crib, start looking to see what’s available and look with your room settings
in mind to see which style and color best suits your décor and pocket book.
- Regardless of the price, please remember that all storkcraft baby cribs meet all North
American safety standards.
- Usually, color or finish is the first decision you will make. That, of course narrows
down the style choices and prices available. By doing this, you’ll have fun looking and your
purchase of a crib will become a very enjoyable experience, which is what it is meant to be.
Buyer's Guide: Look for Quality in your Crib The crib you buy
should:
First of all, we recommend that the crib should be new and made in a country with strict
safety standards. Buying a second hand crib may save you some money initially, but you want
to be sure your newborn has a fresh, new, clean, safe area to enjoy for months and years.
This also ensures that your crib has never been abused or damaged. Because safety standards
are periodically revised, buying a new crib also ensures that it is made to adhere to the
very latest safety standards.
- Have at least one drop side
- Have a solid multi-position support for the mattress
- Have casters to allow easy movement within the nursery
- Have plastic teething rails on each side for additional protection
- Offer additional functions or convertibility. This means your investment will last
longer and your child will enjoy the same secure environment longer
- Be a full size crib. Portable cribs or the mesh side travel
playpens should not be considered a substitute for a full size crib and mattress
If you are using a crib that you purchased some time ago, it
should:
- Not have any protruding corner posts or finials
- Have spacing that is no greater than 60 mm or 2 3/8” apart
- Have all original hardware. It should not have substitutes for manufacturer's hardware
- Have wood panels and rails that are securely joined. If there are loose joints or broken
parts, we strongly recommend that you discard the whole crib
