Some Facts and Figures on Pool Accidents :
- (Source: US Consumer Products Safety Commission study, updated with more recent figures from the National SAFE KIDS Campaign.)
- Each year, an estimated 375 children under 5 years old drown in residential swimming pools, usually a pool owned by their family.
- In addition, more than 2,900 children in that age group (under 5 years old) are treated in hospital emergency rooms for submersion injuries.
- Pool submersions involving children happen quickly. A child can drown in the time it takes to answer the phone.
- Survival depends on rescuing the child quickly . . . seconds count in preventing death and brain damage.
- Child drowning is a silent death. There's no splashing to alert anyone that the child is in trouble.
- Medical costs for submersion injuries during the initial hospitalization alone can be quite high. Costs can range from $75,000 for initial emergency room treatment to $180,000 a year for long term care.
